CHAPTER SEVEN

It was exhausting being the center of attention, Kat thought, edging behind a huge palm tree in the corner of the room. She just needed a moment or two alone, to catch her breath, to understand that this was now her life. Through the thick palm fronds, Kat looked across the ballroom to where Jonas was talking to a group of men. One of them was Rowan Brady, who’d shared Jonas’s table that fateful night three or so weeks ago. Three weeks? Was that all the time that had passed? Sian was also here, flaunting her tattoos, much to the endless fascination of the guests and the disapproval of Jonas’s grandfather.

Jack Halstead looked exactly how Kat imagined Jonas would when he reached old age. A thick head of hair, a craggy face dominated by fiercely intelligent eyes. When she was introduced to him earlier, Jack had acted like an absolute gentleman, nothing in his manner suggesting that he’d blackmailed his grandson into marriage. Actually, she rather liked the old man. He was charming and genial, but she knew he wasn’t someone to be messed with.

In contrast, Kat did not like Lane, Jonas’s father. At all. He’d kissed the back of her hand with fleshy lips that made her skin crawl. Kat felt like he had X-ray eyes that were mentally stripping her. It also interested Kat that Jonas seemed to dislike his father as much as she did. Jonas treated Jack with respect but his body tensed when he had to interact with Lane. He sounded genial but Kat could sense the angry currents swirling beneath their polite conversation. Kat wondered if anyone else knew that father and son loathed each other. Jack certainly seemed to be oblivious to the tension.

Not your business, Kat told herself. You’re in this dress and wearing this stunning ring for the bucks, remember? Do not get sidetracked by your curiosity about your sexy fiancé. Kat darted another look at Jonas and sighed. It should be illegal for a man to look so good in a basic, albeit shockingly well-tailored, tux.

Dragging her eyes off Jonas, Kat realized that Jack and her boss were on the other side of the palm, both oblivious to her presence. Kat stood statue-still, hoping neither would notice her.

“Jack,” Harrison said, tapping his crystal glass filled with expensive whiskey against Jack’s beer glass. Kat rather liked the fact that Jonas’s grandfather drank beer at a black-tie event. Maybe the Halsteads weren’t as stuffy and snobby as she’d expected them to be. “I’m glad to see that you managed the Jonas situation without my help.”

“Your help is expensive,” Jack said, his tone amused.

“That it is. But young Jonas has made a good choice,” Harrison said. “Katrina is the real deal.”

“This is only the engagement. Nothing changes until I see them say I do,” Jack replied and Kat heard the steel in his voice.

“Are you sure this is the only option?” Harrison asked.

“It’s the only way I can protect the company.
